WORDS FROM DAVID WEARS

David Wears was moved enough to write a note on Facebook that I felt the WORLD should have read! My personal thoughts and feelings will remain with me until I can respectfully say what I want concerning the public opinions of ISLANDpeople Mas on the whole.  Kudos to him for NOT following the sheep!

Just my 2 cents on: ISLANDPeopleMas 2014 presentation of WHOLE Mystery Magic Marvel....

August 29, 2013 at 10:29am
LET ME SAY THIS ABOUT #ISLANDPeople: When they fail, they does always get MAJOR rag up for their failure, BUT when they succeed, they does HIT IT out of the OVAL!

Well done, Dane & Derek Lewis, this is yours idea, your brand & your baby. Excellent work, Marlon, Colin & Penny for your creativity, your constant pushing the brand and making the brand WORK. You & your teams have scored big time with something NEW, FRESH & APPEALING!

Well done, Curtis Bachan, lighting director for this event for NAPA! As a photographer, you know how I does cuss allyuh, lol, but the lighting balance with spot on, as is customary with your productions.

When we all assembled at NAPA, Port of Spain, thinking, "What IP coming with now,", I, for one, was a little concerned, as it was a new project for the IP team and there was quite a lot of planning involved.

Walking into the auditorium, looking at the fog-filled space, seeing 2 stages, each off to the sides, opposite of the auditorium staircases, with 2 screen behind the stages, pleased that they were projection based & not LED so the lighting was still perfect onstage, but I saw the 40" TV monitor smack dab in the middle of the floor in front, I wondered what the hell next.

The presentation was a bit long, 75mins, BUT, to me, it kept me entertained throughout. It was mix of mas, drama & performance. I coulda do without the Honourable Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, Dr Lincoln Douglas, who PROVES once again, the reason for walking with a PREPARED SPEECH, which he DIDN'T. I will ignore him.

The 1st segment's sections, Awakening, Dovev(Whispering Truth) & Nahimana(That which is Mystic) show off the Mystery element, with their heavy torquoise, blues, reds & browns hues. Impressive costumes all round but pleased to see Awakening Gladiator man-wear, which will certainly have those musclemen & undercover male S&M lovers thinking of joining.

Spoken word poet, Jean-Claude Cournand, enters the stage to give us his narrative, "A wine could change your life", a very witty view on how IP masqueraders joined the band and it changed their lives. From one about a 1st time visitor to Trinidad, marrying the woman he met & wined on during that Carnival, to calculated proof that a carnival wine led to a birth.

A party Drinks truck cut-out passes across the stage to 'pick up' Jean-Claude complete with a masquerader who hurriedly attempts to teach him how to wine, another FAILED affair! On the 2nd pass by the truck, it drops off Swappy, who mash up the place & shows how to wine as he passing up the auditorium staircase to the exit. LOL

The 2nd segment impresses as the 1st, costumes aplenty, colours & beauties wining on stage. This segment defines the magic, and I have to add, the section, Zulimar ends with the appearance of T&T's TOP MODEL, Soowan Bramble, giving homage to the female frontline costume, which is also beautiful, but THAT WOMAN IS BOSS!! She could make a URP uniform BRILLIANT if she ever has to wear it, even with the HELMET on!! LOL. She received a lusty(and I DO mean lustful) round of applause & cheers from the large turnout as she hit the stage.

Segment 2 ends with Inga Schluer adding violin to the voices of the Bishop Anstey High School's Senior Choir & the vibrant young rhythm section, Hands of Rhythm. They created a harmony entwining soca classics and new rhythms, leading us into the final segment, Mystery, and its sections. Soca artist, Patrice Roberts ends that section coming onstage in full costume and looking GREAT, no longer the little skinny tom-boy dressed Toco gyul, but blossoming into a young ripe Trinbago woman that would melt any heart(and a lil lower) and her costume, from section Qu'elle Marveille, gave tribute to this.
All segments appeared onstage for the last time at the finale and they proceeded out the auditorium to the front foyer for photos and refreshments.

I was very pleased with the turnout of this event for more than one reason. This was the 1st time I had my daughter accompany me and I was glad to see that she witnessed a production that put a little meaning into its event, giving some explanation to why this is done. My 13yr old nodded and bobbed to the music, questioned the reason for such scantily clad wear & enjoyed the overall production. I couldn't ask for more, after all, LET'S FACE IT, we ALL go to Tribe, Fantasy, Yuma, Harts &them others where they all fall into the line of; presentation for 45 minutes, FETE for 4hrs, drink alcohol, get drunk, get lucky, go home. This was a difference. A well thought out event giving another measure of entertainment to those who came. A product that I do hope was visually recorded and will be places online, as I heard it wasn't streamed(unfortunately). Mind you, there was THE FETE after, as all were invited to Zen where, from what I heard, party went on till after 2am. SO THERE!!

And what did people there think? Lemme quote 2 friends. One said it best, "I didn't know this was a race, but IPMas certainly gave the BEST presentation(for 2014)." and another was, "I can't WAIT to see what's gonna happen next year!". I too can't wait, after all, it's gonna be Island People's 10th Anniversary so they have to come good! LOL.

Final word: I know with our fickle society, we love to kick you when you down, and remind you that we did, and then we quickly forget to praise you when you succeed. I have always seen this and tried my best NOT to follow the norm.

I wish to say to you, guys, Well done, IP, for hitting it out of the Oval!

PS. Pls FORGIVE me for not mentioning super T&T dance group, Eclectic, who performed during the showing of IP section, Auric. They were fantastic!!

MORE ON ISLAND PEOPLE

With there being no live feed of ISLANDpeople Mas' band launch last night, I had to wait for pictures and videos to surface on social networks.  Shortly after 10pm, pictures started popping up all over Facebook.  At first I was VERY worried because the first set of pictures I saw were posted by ISLANDpeople Mas themselves on their Facebook Page.  One would think the best pictures of ISLANDpeople Mas' costumes would come from ISLANDpeople Mas but no, they weren't. Pictures posted by them were  not clear, there was poor lighting, no close up shots and missing sections.  In the rush to give the Facebook fans SOMETHING the beauty of the costumes were lost and left me discouraged. It felt as if I was being tortured for not being in NAPA!  Thank God I found this video on the Facebook page of CarnivalScene.com along with some clear pictures.  Then just a few moments ago ISLANDpeople Mas shared the David Wears Facebook Album for some more..

OLD TIME SOMETHING COME BACK AGAIN

Good Morning and Happy Friday!!! As promised Something Jouvert has something to share!!!

Who remembers Ole Time J'ouvert?  Growing up and being afraid of the characters seen in pictures or on the road until your parents or siblings explained the whole jouvert concept.. Characters that use to make a j'ouvert j'ouvert?  Those were the Good Old Days.  Well, Something J'ouvert would like to introduce and welcome an additional section:
"Bring Back D Ole Time Days"!
For more info and pricing you can contact:
Joy 954-448-1208
Marlon "Eternal Vibes" Marcano 954-661-910.
You can add this as the 4th section in the Something Jouvert band.  From what I'm understanding (from Marlon) is that this section is for the more "mature crowd".  I beg to differ, I think this is the ideal section for anyone who was too young to play the jouvert mas of old.  People who only watched pictures of their parents, grandparents and so on on the road.  This gives everyone a chance to be in Some'ting' Jouvert!

SOMETHING JOUVERT SECTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

ORIGINAL SECTION
Giselle the Wassi One and Island Gems
Giselle 786-712-7190
Kim 954-687-3215
Lesel 954-625-5668

Card Fathers alongside Trini Mafia Section
Sunil 954-579-6319
*this section has been advertised with another Jouvert band but this is the ONLY band they will be with

Jamdong Management Section
Mud Devils and Dirty Angels
Kyle 954-536-7772
Zak 954-889-1808

Bring Back D Ole Time Days
Joy 954-448-1208
Marlon "Eternal Vibes" Marcano 954-661-910

This is by far THE BIGGEST JOUVERT BAND!!!!

ISLAND PEOPLE TEASER VIDEO

Can you see all the costumes in this video? There are some from this year and some for next, let's see how well your eyes work!
The mystery, the magic, the whole marvel of it all!!!

It's mans journey through life....
The costumes are designed to mimic these three phases of ones life
First there's the mystery; the unknown
Then there's the magic, the satisfaction or gratification that almost feels magical
As the the magic fades there's now the marvel of what you've become and the unlimited possibilities.
Tuesday can't come soon enough for me!

SPOTLIGHT ENVY

While skimming through the website of Paparazzi Carnival's 2014 Centerstage Sections, I noticed that this ONE costume had no pricing. So I did as was instructed on the site and sent an email.  An explanation of why there was no price listed wasn't answered but in all fairness, I never asked the question.  What I did ask for was a complete breakdown of the offered options along with the prices of each and the following is what I received.

Option 1  Large headpiece and backpack  $1195US
Option 2  Large headpiece without backpack  $895US
Option 3  Tiara and backpack $895US
*Boyshorts and other special requests can/will be done on an individual basis. Pictures will follow..

This section is completely frontline, they are dealing with NO backline.  There will be a limited amount of space, 30/40 people tops. The options are pretty cut and dry, you either choose to play in a large headpiece with or without a backpack or a tiara with a backpack. I love the fact that along with these options you can choose whichever body type shown. *Either the monokini or the "sexxi bikini".  Those of you women that choose the "sexxi bikini", I WANT PICTURES! Cause I don't have that kind of belly, literally.  It is sexy but that kind of sexy would lead to my divorce.

As far as pricing, I find it to be fair (once compared to the other sections within the band).  It is higher but there are only three sections with backpacks in Paparazzi and of the three, the largest backpack belongs to Spotlight Envy and the large headpiece is a nose hair shorter than THREE FEET!  Let's face it, one of them had to be the cheapest and another had to be the most expensive. Well, here's the most expensive!

SECRET SECTION

SOMETHING JOUVERT has a secret section.  When this first came across the table, it didn't too much matter to me because who DOESN'T have a secret section in either a jouvert or mas band these days? This section captures the very essence of Jouvert. I'm down and all for it.  The official announcement will be made on Friday so keep your ears and your eyes open!

Feel free to enjoy the few pictures that I've uploaded here until the entire gallery is uploaded on the entertainment site iChunes Radio.  Professional pictures will be uploaded to Wassi Ones' Website shortly. Enjoy!

YUMA'S WEBSITE IS UP, WITH COSTUMES!!!

What ever issues YUMA had in the past, they're working double time to have it cleaned all up because although there is NO live feed, they've done something for their overseas masqueraders.  As the band launch is going on right now, their website is up for us to view costumes.  The website is not open for registrations or anything but they're allowing we overseas masqueraders who can not see the costumes in person at the launch OR via live stream to see SOMETHING until pictures begin to surface online. Customer service at it's best in my opinion..

I don't see any section that I 'hate' but there were a few that stood out to me and those were Mystere (Rainbow section), Nouba (Playful, colorful and a nice contrast of the black and white stripes against the colors), Totem and Alegria - (Has a midnight waterfall kind of finish).  I only wish I could have been in Trinidad to see them up close and personal.  For your viewing pleasure click HERE to see YUMA's 2014 presentation....CirQue

ISLAND PEOPLE MAS HAS A DATE

ISLANDpeople Mas has finally released their band launch date.  They waited 25 days before the launch to release their date and what a date it is!  The 27th of August is on a TUESDAY!  When I first heard the date and realized that it was on a Tuesday, I gasped.  After being reliably informed of what's in store for this launch, I saw the vision and I agree that a Tuesday evening would be fitting. After all, what else can NAPA be used for? *wink

FUGEES DIRECTOR SENTENCED TO 90 YEARS FOR RAPING HIS OWN DAUGHTERS

MTV award winner and Grammy award Fugees Director Aswad Ayine was found guilty and has been sentenced 90 years in prison for sexually assaulting and impregnating his own daughters.  The New Jersey court found the 55-year-old, who directed the Fugees' song "Killing Me Softly" in 1996, guilty of raping five of his seven daughters to create "pure" family bloodlines to survive doomsday.  Ayinde sexually assaulted his daughters during the mid-1980s to 2002 and fathered six children with them, New Jersey prosecutor said. Ayinde delivered the babies himself and also buried two who were stillborn.  He reportedly raped his daughters in an abandoned funeral home before separating from his wife.  The court documents said that Ayinde, who is a self-proclaimed prophet, had nine children with his former wife and another three with two other women.  "He said the world was going to end, and that it was just going to be him and his offspring and that he was chosen,"  Beverly Ayinde said at a pre-trial hearing in 2010, according to New York Daily News.  Ayinde has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, in addition to a 40-year prison term which he received in November 2011 for raping his daughters.  During the latest trial prosecutor revealed that Ayinde, also known as Charles McGill, had sexual intercourse with his second daughter since she was eight years old.
